1.Why is it important to use native species for reforestation?

Native species have higher potential of being reforested for various reasons. First of all, if you use native specie for reforestation, then humans don’t need to intervene in the creation of the forest or jungle or biological corridor. Inhabitant species are recognized for reforestation fundamental, because they take their role in the ecosystem and help manage and create the new habitat.
The Native Species Reforestation Project (PRORENA) has the vivion of “establishing diverse native forest cover across extensive areas of deforested tropical lands, and demonstrating that large-scale ecological restoration in the tropics is technically feasible, socially attractive, and financially viable”. Their goal is to to maintain a development of viable strategies. “Degraded tropical landscapes, the dissemination of this information to the widest possible range of interested parties, and the training of future natural resource managers and scientists able to utilize and build upon these efforts.”

During Monte Verde, we had a class that thought us about Biological Corridors. We learned about native species and about the species found in Monte Verde. In this workshop we did indexes of the species in different areas of the university. They showed us how important it was for them to use native species for the biological corridors. Also, that by using native species, it is much more successful since they are able to generate all the aspects and things needed.

2.How does development impact biodiversity in Monte Verde?

Throughout the world still many countries remain undeveloped, these countries usually have healthier environment and more biodiversity due to the fact that there is less human impact. However, the majority of these countries are advancing to a better economic standing, by starting to turn to development. As consequence of the development many species are being killed and threatened by harm that the development of this countries cause to its biodiversity.
The endangered wild trust states that there are different ways the development affects the biodiversity:

Habitat loss and degradation, for example, the destruction of wetlands, grasslands and indigenous forests for housing estates or low cost housing.
Habitat fragmentation - ecosystems and the species therein, need a certain amount of interconnectivity for processes to continue. If a specific natural area is broken up into smaller pieces, eventually species disappear and certain functions are lost. For example, a large intact wetland can fulfill its functions far better than a wetland that is divided into two pieces.
• Loss of species, for example the plants and animals endemic to a particular habitat will not be able to survive if that habitat is destroyed or altered by development.
Natural environmental processes, such as continued river flow, water purification, and erosion control, are affected. This can lead to an accumulated effect on both habitat and species. Or, this can continue to affect habitats and therefore species into the long-term until they die out.
Direct impacts, for example birds colliding with power lines, electrocutions.
Pollution effects on ecosystems and thus species.

Throughout the week at Monte Verde, I learned that human development has greatly affected this society. Overall in the all the courses we learned how humans impact biodiversity. Specially in the service learning proyect. We were able to reduce the impact caused on this enviorment.

1.What is the 2010 biodiversity target?

external image 2010_Logo_Lg.jpg
In 2002, parties from the Convention committed themselves to achieve by 2010 a goal. It was to reduce significantly the rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national levee;. This, as contribution to alleviation and to the benefit of all life on earth. “This target was subsequently endorsed by the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the United Nations General Assembly and was incorporated as a new target under the Millennium Development Goals”

During the week we were in Monteverde, we did not focus specially on this subject. We did talk talk a lot of bio diversity and how the range and the variety of plants, trees and animals have shrunk tremendously.

Even though the 2010 biodiveristy target was not completely accomplished for 2010, I think it is a gripping target. Which should be continued and should be accomplished by the year 2020 or if it very difficult, for the year 2025. Despite the failure of this target, This should be on our minds and should be a goal for all the companies, institutions, and people around the world.

2.How are biodiversity and climate change related?

The green house gases are gases that act like the glass roof of the planet tapping the heat produce by human, warming it. Some examples of these gases are: carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and ozone. The levels of these gases depend on the emission resulting form human activities, examples of this activities farming activities, land-use changes and burning fossil fules. As a consequence the low atmosphere and the surface of the earth warm up and this rise in temperature and causes many other changes.

There is ample evidence that biodiversity is affected by climate change. According to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, climate change is likely to become one of the most significant drivers of biodiversity loss by the end of the century. The climate has always change the ecosystem and species throughout the Planet’s history, but the rapid and extreme climate change interfere with the species ability to adapt and main characteristics of the environment so biodiversity loss increases. Biodiversity is force by the clime change to adapt either through changing life cycles, shifting habitat, or the development of new physical traits.

According to the Convention on Biological Diversity (December, 2009), from a human perspective, the rapid climate change and accelerating biodiversity loss risks human security (e.g. a major change in the food chain upon which we depend, water sources may change, recede or disappear, medicines and other resources we rely on may be harder to obtain as the plants and forna they are derived from may reduce or disappear, etc.).

3.What are ecosystem services?

The benefits people obtain from ecosystems are known as ecosystem services. These include services such as food and water.

Environment produces resource which are fundamental life support services for humankind.
We use and need most of this resources in our daily basis but often take them for granted.
Some examples of ecosystem services are:

Provisioning services
Food. Such as: spices and crops.
Water
Minerals
Energy such as Hydropower, geothermal energy and biomass fuels

Regulating services
Climate regulations
Pollination
Recollecting nutrients

Cultural services
Cultural, intellectual and spiritual inspiration
Ecotourism
Scientific Discovery

Throughout the week at Monte Verde, we learned of ecosystems and the services we recieve from them. We saw different types of plants that gave us food. Also we went to the weather station in which we learned about climate and its regulations. Also, we learned about the nutrients and minerals we van get different types of ecosystems. We learned on the differnet tourist attractions and ecotourism that the nature makes us have.

1.How is international trade related to endangered species of wild fauna and flora?

International trade is related to endangered species of wild fauna and flora in many ways. International trade is the capturing and selling of flora and fauna. What’s commonly known as Wildlife Trade is when they sell species for food, medicine or other human usage.

International trade has various problems relating to nature. In many parts of the world, this trading is illegal for some usages, but people just decide to ignore it. Each time, a human being decides to kill and animal, plant or something of nature to use it as medicine, accessories, and food or even to harm it; they are decreasing the number of species left on Earth. This trade affects biodiversity since it affects the endangered species tremendously. It also includes, introducing specie to a habitat where they don’t have the characteristics and the necessities they need to live freely and safely.

Since this is the second largest Problem in Biodiversity, there are several organization trying to fight against it. The main organization is called CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) This is an international augments between governments, that are trying to stop international trade from killing animals and selling unnecessarily. This program works by dividing the animals into groups. It works because every import, export and introduction from the sea have to be authorized by this company. CITES covers a main group of animals which are divided into three appendices. The Appendices are divided according to the protection each animal has to have.

Wake up each morning to see the woodland,Having nature in your hand,Walking to the cafeteria to eat some fruitsOnthe way, stepping on grass roots
Feeling the sun on your skinWhile hearing the teacher say, “begin”Doing projectsOn all the subjects
People, music, crickets and birdsAll of these were common wordsSoil, grass and rocksAll things you saw on walks
At night, seeing the constellationsWas being on vacations.

-By Karolina Koberg-
What's the purpose of the product?
The purpose of my poem is to illustrate my emotion through the art of writing. My experience in Monte Verde was a unique and beautiful one, worthy of sharing with the rest of the class.

What is it used for?
The poem can be use as an inspiration for love and respect of nature and all the benefits that it grant us with.

How is it used?
It can be used as a daily reminder of how blessed we are living in a country with a sustentions amount of biodiversity all around us.

Give an example.
For example in my poem I am using nature as the inspiration and showing my love for it using words. As Shakespeare was inspired by love when writing Romeo and Juliet.

  • Half the world’s tropical forests have been cleared or degraded. Every hour, at least 4,500 acres of forest fall to chain saws, machetes, flames, or bulldozers. Population growth, poverty, and unequal access to land are among the major causes of deforestation.
